The front page of the April 10, 1936 edition of the Dartmouth News hangs in the front lobby of the 25 Elm Street offices of The Chronicle, a weekly newspaper serving the communities of Westport and Dartmouth. "Informative and Entertaining, Invaluable to Home Folks," says the banner running beneath the nameplate of that old newspaper. Next to that is a box noting the venerable paper served "a population of 10,000 good people." The population of the two towns is more than four times that now, but The Chronicle’s mission remains the same "to provide our loyal readers (and now on-line audience) with the facts on town politics, police and fire reports, school happenings, sporting events and business news" and tell the stories and show the pictures that help chronicle our lives together in these communities.
Since 1969, the news has been delivered by the employees of Hathaway Publishing, a family business founded by Sidney L. Hathaway in 1932. His son, Warren Hathaway, purchased the then-struggling weekly paper in Dartmouth and renamed it The Chronicle. For a time, it was published out of the editor’s home, then moved to offices on State Road in the 1970’s, Elm Street in the 1980’s, and, now, Elm Street in New Bedford.
Our mission is simple: to deliver a fair and accurate reporting of current events in our communities for our many readers. We also strive to tell you interesting stories about your friends, neighbors, children, community leaders, and businesses offering important goods and services. Everything from police logs to cable television schedules, school menus and church suppers can be found on only our pages every week -- and now many of these offerings can be viewed on line 24-7 as well. We are committed to sharing every bit of information we can in both print and on this website that has the potential to inform, educate and enlighten you.
